World Investor Week 2021

World Investor Week is a global campaign promoted by the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) to raise awareness about the importance of investor education and protection. During October 4-10, 2021, the Securities and Exchange Commission (national coordinator), Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, National Futures Association, North American Securities Administrators Association and supporters are working together with interested government agencies, localities, and organizations to promote World Investor Week 2021 (WIW 2021) and its goals in the United States.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 4TH

Term of the Day: Microcap Stock

A microcap stock refers to stock of a smaller company with a market capitalization between 50 and 300 million dollars. Often called “penny stocks," microcap stocks tend to carry more risk for both volatility and manipulation due to limited publicly-available information.

Term of the Day: Day Trading

Day trading is the rapid buying and selling of stocks in the same day with the hope of making a quick profit. It’s a short-term investment strategy that can be extremely time-consuming, expensive, and risky.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 6TH

Term of the Day: ESG Investing

 “ESG” stands for environmental, social, and governance. ESG investing is a way of investing in companies based on their commitment to one or more ESG factors. It is often also called sustainable investing, socially responsible investing, and impact investing.

Term of the Day: Fractional Shares

A fractional share is when you own less than one full share of a stock or other security. Fractional shares are a way to invest for investors who do not have enough money to purchase a full share of a particular stock.

Term of the Day: Margin Account

A margin account is a type of brokerage account in which the broker-dealer lends the investor cash, using the account as collateral, to purchase securities. Margin increases investors’ purchasing power, but also exposes investors to the potential for larger losses.

Term of the Day: SPAC

“SPAC” stands for special purpose acquisition company—what are also commonly referred to as blank check companies. SPACs have become a popular vehicle for various transactions, including transitioning a company from a private company to a publicly traded company.

Term of the Day: Index Funds

An index fund is a type of mutual fund or ETF that seeks to track the returns of a market index. A market index measures the performance of a “basket” of securities (like stocks or bonds), which is meant to represent a sector of a stock market, or of an economy.

Index funds can be a low-cost, tax-efficient and diversified way to invest in securities.
